INSPIRATION~

The world is better when people dream big dreams and believe that impossible things can happen.

Setting Impossible Goals, Having faith the size of a mustard seed, knowing prayer changes things, praying without ceasing and expecting God to Move Mountains!

OUR STORY

I’m Deborah Cobb, the proud owner of 10.90 Axe House, and I’ve called Alamogordo home for over 38 years. My late husband Curtis and I shared 27 years together raising 3 children here in Otero County.

Unfortunately, we faced an unexpected tragedy when we lost Curtis in a trucking accident on our  granddaughters first birthday in February 2019. The grief was overwhelming, leadign me to search for ways to cope with stress online. That’s when I discovered Smash Rooms, and my son suggested adding Axe Throwing to our business.

At the time… I was of the mindset I needed financial security, having been a stay-at-home mom for over 25 years I thought it was necessary for me to start making a living and to leave an inheritance to my children. In doing so, I made the irrational decision to start my own business, not realizing the challenges ahead. Sadly, I did not heed the advice I was given to not make any major financial decisions in the first year of experiencig grief!

Ultimately, I learned the hard way the building was not up to code, and consequently I made some not so good business choices after and those decisions cost me everything. But perhaps my biggest mistake was placing my trust in people rather than in God.

I passed the building inspections just in time for covid lock-downs,  unfortunately, because of covid I never opened my doors officially. I met oppostition, peoples fears and vendetta’s, and I fought as hard as I could to get an expemption/waiver from the governor but to “no avail” so the business never officially opened. I fell through the cracks – not elible for assistance. Eventually, I Lost the battle and succumbed. I was evicted in January 2020.

The following 7 months were filled with grief over the loss of my husband and my business. Just as I was getting a grip on life my House flooded in August 2020.

Despite a barage of setbacks; covid still lingering, contractors short handed due to people refusing to work, local housing of refugees, and materials skyrocketing and in short supply I knew the house flooding was a blessing in disguise. It was not easy living in and reconstructing and remodeling the house ourselves, but we managed it. We spent 10 months on the major remodel work and just as we were starting to see light at the end of our tunnel and convinced we were finally going to get to leave NM I got a phone call.

In July 2022, I was asked if I’d consider opening the “Axe House” portion of my former business. After praying about it, I felt led to try again. It took us several months to find a suitable location I told them I would need to pray about it and get back with them. It took until December to find a suitable location in the White Sands Mall and in Janurary 2023 I officially created the new business , and placed my faith in God. My pockets were empty, and my head was filled with Big Dreams knowing that Nothing is impossible for God.

10.90 Axe House has a purpose – to be a blessing to many in the days ahead. It is the desire of my heart to live on God’s 10% and give away the 90! I know there is no way I can out give God. He shall supply all my needs!

And in February, He indeed did! The funding was available and we began to build out the lanes, and perdictably it was not long before we found ourselves facing Issues about our Business License. So, we sat idle for over 2.5 months waiting for a determination on sprinklers (did I have enough to put out a fire!?) While waiting on the Fire Department we encountered some of the same kind of opposition we had with the prior business as the integrity of the new business was attacked and placed under scrutany. I have since addressed this matter and I hope and pray that I will see no more of this kind of opposition in the future – (time will tell).

Despite the diversity of challenges we faced … we opened our doors on May 24, 2023, just in time for summer. We have had some hiccups with our point of sale system (we are on #3). Learning curves are atrocious, but we are feeling pretty good about the one we are with currently, and we’re commited to improving and expanding our services, including leagues, memberships, merhcandise, special events and tournaments. We are thrilled to be able to bring this fun, unique, axciting and afforable sport to Alamogordo, its neighboring communities , and to the Airmen at Holloman Air Force Base.

Our family understands the sacrifice and demands on Miltary Families. our families miltary connection runs deep. I arrived in Alamogordo in 1985 as a Military spouse. Curtis served in the Army during Vietnam in the 70;s and our children continue on the connection. Our son, served as a Marine, and our oldest daughter and husband are active duty Air Force, and our youngest daughter is a married to an Airmen. As a Parent I am tremdously proud and Thankful for all of them. As a business – 10.90 Axe House is proud to support them, and all the Men and Women stationed at Holloman Air Force Base, and surrounding military bases.

Lastly, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported, encouraged and believed in us. We’re here for the long haul. We are thrilled to be able to bring this unique, and affordable sport to our community. We are determined to make a positive impact on Alamogordo, and our Military Families. Thank you all for your ongoing support!
